Why is
Nyon such a popular cycling destination?
Nyon, just 25 km from Geneva downtown, is a picture perfect town on Lake Geneva, so it is a perfect base for a long weekend to enjoy the lake, the charming countryside and the large number of quaint local restaurants and cafes.
Nyon also makes for one of the very best bases for a cycling holiday. If you prefer leisurely rides then you are at the lake front and you can ride on mostly flat roads and the excellent cycle path that runs along the whole Swiss side of the lake.
If you want to do some proper road cycling then the choice of fantastic routes is immense. Head up into the Jura mountains and you will see what we mean. If you ride to the small town of Genolier just north of Nyon, following the Swiss national cycle route number 7, you will embark on one of our favourite mountain roads in the region. After approximately 12 km on gradients that will touch 10% in places, this quiet road will open up into a very remote small valley called les Ambournex, which is typical of the Jura landscape. After some 15km of mostly flat riding, where you are unlikely to meet more than a couple of cars, you can turn right and climb up to the Col de Marchairuz which will then allow for a truly fantastic descent in the forest all the way back to the lake. If you want to venture further, at the Marchairuz turn off go left and descend down to the Lac de Joux. This area at the bottom of this great descent is famous for many of the luxury Swiss watch manufactures. At the end of the Lake de Joux you turn right and make an easy climb up to the Col de Mollendruz, which again allows you to descend back down to the shores of Lake Geneva.
This is cycling paradise and we cannot recommend it strongly enough!
