Our cycling tips in and around Interlaken

Where we love to ride

For keen road cyclists the tour to the Grosse Scheidegg, a pass which separates Grindelwald from Meiringen, is probably one of the most epic rides in the whole world. We would recommend to do this loop in a clockwise direction. Ride out to Meiringen and turn right up the road to the Grosse Scheidegg which in its final section is closed to traffic, except for the local post bus. The road is narrow and very steep.

The climbs starts at about 600 mts and the pass is at 1968 mt so not only is this a long climb but some sections are well above 12% gradient. The views at the top, overlooking the North face of the Eiger are beyond beautiful!  This is proper Swiss cycling! Alternatively you can tackle the mighty Grimsel pass and continue along the Oberaar Panorama Strasse which is a  6 km extension above Grimsel Pass and which is partly closed to traffic. The climb starts in Meiringen some 25 km from Interlaken which is at 595mt above sea level and culminates at the Grimsel at 2164 mts.

Why Interlaken is such a popular cycling destination ?

Interlaken sits on a small isthmus between lake Thun and lake Brienz and is the gateway to the Swiss Oberland region with its world famous ski resort of Grindelwald and Wengen.

Interlaken offers a perfect base for a road or mountain bike holiday. You can cycle along the shore of the lakes for a peaceful ride with stunning views or head inland to tackle some great single track MTB trails. You will be rewarded by stunning views over the Eiger and Jungfrau.

For keen road cyclists the tour to the Grosse Scheidegg, a pass which separates Grindelwald from Meiringen, is probably one of the most epic rides in the whole world. Alternatively you can tackle the mighty Grimsel pass and continue along the Oberaar Panorama Strasse. Again the views are stunning.
